LAWRENCE BOROUGH COUNCIL.

The ordinary meeting of the abovenamed body was held in the Council Chambers on Monday evening, when there were present : His Worship the Mayor (Mr J. O. Browne), and Ors Jeffery, Blair, Chalmers, Walker, Winn and Johnson.

The minutes of the previous meeting were read and conßrmed. CORRESPONDENCE. From Messrs J. O. Arbuckle and John Thompson applying for renewal of their auctioneering licensee. — Granted on the usual conditions. From A. and T. Burt, Dunedin, acknowledging receipt of cheque and further order. — Received. From Annie Alexander, notifying that she had disposed of her property in Lismore-street to Mr A. Miller, and asking that her name be taken off the ratebook in respect thereof. — .Received. From A. Clullee, Secretary of the Benevolent Trustees, informing the Council that they were prepared to receive Mr R. Hansen into the institution at any time, « REPORTS. The following report from tbe Inspector of Works was read and adopted :—: — I have the honor to report that the surfacemen have been engaged duiing the last six weeks in taking down and re-erecting the fence along the boundary of the ground purchased by the Council from Messrs Herbert and Co. for. a site for a new dam, a distance of 15 chains; also grubbed the roadline of gorse and broom alongside sections 2 and 20, block 19, Tuapeka East district and Crown lands, a distance of 7 chains, and burnt the refuse as well. They have cleaned the channels in Peel-street, Boss Place, and Beaumont Boad, a distance of SO chains, and removed part of the material to assist in filling in the lower portion of Steep-street. The Inspector of Nuisances reported as follows : — He complaint mad 9to me by Mr Wm. Bloy about drains around the property occupied by him, I think it is a case of landlord and tenant, and that the landlord is the proper person for him to look to. The geese nuisance on the streets has been done ' away with. I have summoned owners and impounded 31 head of cattle and horses at Is per head, the streets at present being very clear of stock. LEAVE OP ABSENCE. On the motion of Ors Jeffery and Winn two months' leave of absence was granted to Or Smyth. ACCOUNTS. -"' The following accounts were passed for payment : — Wm. Ferguson, £1 6s 2d; Herbert and Co., £1 Is Id ; T, Bougban, 2s ; Bobt. Robertson, £1 lls ; Tuapeka County Council, £55 13s; Government Insurance' Department (interest), £65^ FINANCIAL. The return laid on the table showed the balances of tbe various accounts to be as follow : General and Waterworks, £2?8 12$ lid and £31 4a 6d in debit respectively; Cemetery, £82 14s 6d in credit. THE CEMETERT. His Worship drew the Council's attention to the necessity of appointing a man to take care of the cemetery. The person who had lately been digging the graves had suddenly refused to undertake tbe work and tbe Council had b,een put to some inconvenience in the matter. There was a feeling that it would be advisable to have some one in charge the whole time. The question was whether they should take action in the matter at onpe or ask the Cemetery Committee to bring up a report at next meeting. Cr Jeffery thought it would be better to leave the matter in the bands of the Cemetery Committee to bring up a report at next meeting. Cr Walker said several members of the Cemetery Committee had talked the matter over and he thought they should ! fix an annual salary for keeping the cemetery in order and sinking the graves and oall for -applications at once. He moved .- " That applications be at once called for the position and that the salary be £36 per annum." Cr Winn said that asi one off the Cemetery Committee Or Walker had misunderstood bis i,dea on the matter. He thought that a fixed amount should be paid for keeping tbe cemetery in good order throughout th,e year and the grave sinking paid for according to % fi^ed scale". | 'Oy "Walker*B. motion, not finding a | seconder, lapsed.

Or Jeffery moved, seconded by Or Chalmers: "That the question be referred back to the Cemetery Committee to bring up a report at next meettog " _.

Or Winn moved as an amendment :. "That the Cemetery * Committee hid recon^men'ded to call for applications for (n.airifcaVnirig the cemetery in good order and digging graves at a fixed scale." — Seconded by Or Walker.
