New Line of Cable.
The cable scheme which the Government are considering provides for laying a cable from the Northern part of the colony to Brisbane as the first link in the Pacific cable. The Minister thinks the commercial interests of New Zealand require cheaper communication with Australia than the private company ii disposed to give. The estimated cost to this colony of the proposed new cable is £120,000.
