DTTN^DIN MARKETS-STOCK, &c JBttbksidk — Wbtot esdat
Fat Cattle.— A very large supply came forward— all from the south of Dunedin. The greater part were light weights and inferior quality, with some small odd lots of prime. Butchers, being well supplied from late full markets, were careless about buying anything but best sorts, and even these had to be sold at slightly reduced rates, while other descriptions had simply to be sacrificed. The general complaint was scarcity of feed. Prime bullocks sold at £5 to £8 17s 6d, others £3 to £4 Its 6d, best cows £4 15s to £6 17s 6d, others £2 2s to £4 12s 6d. Wright, Stephenson and Co. sold 45 head as follows : — For Mr J. B. Blair, 7 prime bullocks at £8 10s ; for Mr William Fenwick (Maraeweka estate), 4 prime bullocks (light-weights) at from £7 to £7 7s 6d, and 8 prime heifers at from £4 17s 6d to £6 2s 6d ; for Mr William Kirkland, 13 halfbred Hereford steers and heifers (light weights) at £4 2s 6d to £6 12s 6d ; and for Messrs John Douglas (Mount Royal estate), H. Carawell and Co. (Invercargill, as agentß), Scott and Wilson (Waihola), and H. Templeton, 23 head at quotations. Fat Sheep. — A large entry in this class, 3540 being penned. This number included some 420 merinos of medium to prime quality. The rest (3120 crossbreds) ranged from stores to nice quality butcher's mutton, with a few pens suitable for the freezing chamber. Unfortunately there was an entire absence of buyers for thaf purpose, so that all business had to be done with butchers and turnip feeders, of whom therj were some present. There was nothing calling for special note as regards weights. Sales opened- rather languid, with a diop of from 9d to la 6d per head below last week, budt prices were very irregular and fluctuated a bit throughout the day's proceedings. A strong demand exists, and all consignmtJlto snbmitted to public competition are keenly run up, resulting in prices being obtained which, in the meantime, do not promise much of a margin for export.
