FOOTBALL.
The match, Wetherstones v. Lawrence, was played on tbe local recreation ground on Thursday afternoon, and resulted in a win for Lawrence by 6 points to nil. H. Hart ami J. Roscoe captained the respective team?. Roscoo won the toss, and elected to defend the eastern goal. H.irt kicked off, but the ball being charged down, a scrummage was formed, in which Wetherstones more than held their own. Liwrenee 3a w that their ch.inee was in making the game a loose one ; and, from a five dribble down the field, Hurrop fell across the line, but the bull was called back for an infringement of the rules. Shortly after this, the same player ran in, but unfortunately went into touch in goal. From the kick out, the ball was well returned ; and after some play, of a give-aud take character, the ball was kicked hard against Curtin, and, bounding back, Harrop seized it and was over the line in a twinkling and scored an unmistakeable try. The ball was placed for W. Robertson, who kicked an easy goal Half-time was now up, and the score stood — Lawrence, 3 points; Wetherstones, nil. Wetherstones in the second spell was placed at a disadvantage, playing a man short, one of their prominent three quarters having to retire. Nothing daunted, however, they played like Trojans, and several times were in dangerous proximity to the Lawrence goal Hue, but the defence was too good. Lawrence now got on a fine rush, and the ball was worked down to the Wethe<*stones twenty-five. Tyson, who secured the ball, took a pot at goal, and sent the leather fairly over the bar. Scores — Lawrence, 6 points ; Wetherstones, nil. No further scoring resulted. Wetherstones played well, but, as might be expected among so many new players, lacked combination ; but with a little more practice will be hard to beat. Every member of the Lawrence team played all they knew, and acknowledged their victory was a hard fought one, and that the Wetherstones team were foeraen worthy of their steel. The Lawrence backs could with advantage kick more than they do ; and both teams could with advantage talk a little less. This spirit of friendly rivalry between Wetherstones and Liwrence should do much to sustain the game here. FOKWAKD.
