APPEAL MADE.

Clothing and Footwear for Needy Children. An early start with the urgent work of providing boots and clothing for children in need was decided on yesterday at a meeting of the newlv-con-stituted Children’s Relief Committee. There were present the Mayor of Christchurch (Mr D. G. Sullivan, M.P.), Messrs E. J. Howard. M.P., A. T. Donnelly, C. S. Thompson, E. 11. Hitchcock. E. Edridge, A. B. Macintosh, and J. W. Beanland. Mr Thompson was elected chairman. The Mayor reported that several donations were to hand, the amount immediately available being £3OO. It was estimated, however, that nearly £OOOO would be required to provide the children with footgear and clothing. It was decided that an immediate appeal be made to the public f<5T additional subscriptions. The Mayor said that Miss Havelaar. of the Women’s Auxiliary of the Mayoral fund, and her associates, were willing to give part of their time to making up clothes for school children: and a similar offer had been received from the Women’s Unemployment Committee. Messrs Thompson, Macintosh and Edridge were appointed a sub-committee with power to spend up to £SO on ur-

gent cases, particularly where lack of clothing prevented children from going to school. It was indicated by the Mayor that the City Council Relief Committee would spend about £6OO in procuring milk or cocoa during the balance of the winter months. It was decided to ascertain from head masters and school committees their ideas on the lines action should take. It was also decided that only new clothes and new shoes and boots should be supplied. Every family in the city which can afford to do so is to be asked to supply a pair of shoes or its equivalent in cash, and firms are to be canvassed to find out whether any of them will adopt a school and see its needy pupils have clothes and footgear. A further meeting of the committee will be held this week.
