OBITUARY.
Henry George Clarke. There died at Auckland yesterday Mr 11. G. Clarke, formerly of Christchurch. He was the only son of the late Joseph Clarke, merchant, of Lichfield Street. He was born in 1850 at Wiltshire, England. After his education at the Sydney Grammar’ School he entered commercial life with his father and later became a partner in the business carried on by them as Joseph Clarke and Son. In 1910 Mr Clarke removed to Auckland, where he established the business of H. G. Clarke and Co., from which he retired five years ago. Mr Clarke was twice married, his first wife being a daughter of the late Mr Thomas Atkins, then a well-known sheep farmer at Nelson. She died many years ago. lie re-married and is survived by his widow and eight children of his former marriage, five sons and three daughters, also by twentyone grandchildren and one great grandchild. Mr Clarke will be remembered as a man of kindly and generous disposition. His charity was always unostentatious. A staunch churchman throughout his whole life he was associated with the Baptist Church both in Christchurch and in Auckland. He was for forty years a subscriber to the “ Christchurch Times.”
