KETCH ASHORE.
Crew of Two Safe; Salvage Attempted. Per Press Association. WELLINGTON, This Dav. The following message has been received by the Director-General of the Post and Telegraph Department (the Hon Adam Hamilton) from the postmaster at Kaitaia: ‘‘The two-masted ketch Mehongo, from Ilokianga. is the breakers at Ahipara Beach, opposite Reid’s boarding-house. The sea is very rough. The crew of two, J. W. Wray and D. Wellington, are safely ashore. The vessel is lying on a sandy bottom. Salvage operations are being attempted. The vessel was previously named Neva, of Ilokianga.” The ketch went ashore at Ahipara Bay, at the southern end of Ninety Mile Beach, last night. The ketch left Ilokianga on Sunday, but heavy weather prevented her rounding CapeMaria van Diemen, and she was gradually driven back. It is unlikely that she will be refloated.
