INSPIRING EXAMPLE.

Life of Service Led by Mrs E. R. McCombs. A memorial service to the late Mrs E. R. McCombs, M.P., was held at St Paul’s Presbyterian Church yesterday. Among the crowded congregation were the Mayor (Mr D. G. Sullivan. M.P.), members of the City Council and their wives. members of other local bodies, the Women’s Christian Temperance Union and the trade unions. The preacher was the Rev J. A. Allan, of Riccarton, and the service was conducted by the Rev A. C. Watson, minister of St Paul’s Church. The Womens Christian Temperance Union’s memorial service was read by the immediate past Dominion president of the movement (Mrs T. EjTaylor) and the Canterbury district president (Mrs El. M. Hall). The Rev J. A. Allan took his text from the fourteenth chapter of the Book of Revelation, “ Blessed are the dead, which die in the Lord from henceforth.: N ea, saith the Spirit, that they may rest from their labours and their works do follow them.” The preacher said that after the shock suffered by the community in the death ° f SO ins P irin S: a leader as Mrs McCombs had been it was timely to reflect on the words of that text. It would be out of place to attempt to survey the life of Mrs McCombs or to attempt to estimate her achievements. That had been the privilege of those who had known her best. He went on to speak of the meaning of the life that follows after death in the world of mortals, and in paying a tribute to Mrs McCombs stated that behind her she had left an inspiration that would live for ever, and a record of service that would continue as an example to men and women in all stations and of all schools of thought.
