Although China has always special ised in picturesque punishments, its latest idea in this line isn’t quite so dra c tic as some of the old ones. The authorities in Canton discovered that people were travelling 1 buses without paying their fares. This Practice had to be stopped, so a number of buses were raioea, a.j.. ,—■ sengers, who failed to produce tickets, were rounded up. The 500 were ” taken for a ride,” but not to the destination to which they were travelling before. They were carried in the opposite direction. dropped at a point 20 miles from the city, and told to walk back.
