TROTTING NOTES.

DOMINATIONS for the Canterbury Park Trotting Club's winter meeting will close on May 23, at noon. FAILED BADLY. One of the biggest disappointments at the Oamaru Trotting Club’s meeting on Saturday was Battlefield, who contested the Papakaio Handicap, decided over one mile and a quarter. He was driven by F. P. Rrosnan and when the race had been in progress four furlongs he was tenth in a packed field. He never improved his position, and came home like a secondrater. He must have been off colour. WAI-I AT BLENHEIM. In a field of five, Wah is set to give away 84yds over two miles in the principal event at the Marlborough Trotting Club’s meeting to-morrow. Wah has shown good form over two miles, and although his four opponents are pacers he. is the best stayer of the party. Wah has trotted two miles in a race in 4min 39sec, and so off 4min 43sec in a 4min 50sec class he should beat a field of moderate pacers. CONSISTENT. Bracken has put up a fine record for consistency this season. She followed Taxpayer home in the President's Handicap at Oamaru on Saturday and made her record three firsts, four seconds and three thirds in ten starts. She has done particularly well under the tutelage of the Addington trainer, F. C. Dunlevev, who has prepared thirty-three winners this season. AN IMPROVING PACER. Belle Derby has proved a rare bargain for her present owner, who purchased her at a low price. Belle Derby is attached to H. Frost’s stable at Greymouth, and she is by Nelson Derby from Holly Bell. She was bred at M. B. Edwards’s establishment at Yaldhurst. Belle Derby is now owned by Mr J. Steele, and she shaped very well at the recent meetings held on the West Coast. She is freely engaged at the Marlborough Trotting Club's meeting to-morrow, where she should add to her list of successes. UNLUCKY, The backers of Great Logan were quite satisfied with the gelding’s chance in the President’s Handicap at Oamaru until he suffered a serious setback nearly five furlongs from home. Great Logan brgan smoothly, and was going very easily when the accident happened. It is doubtful if he would have beaten Taxpayer, who is a much stronger finisher than Great Logan is at the end of a two-mile journey. WELL PLACED. The aged mare Mabel Chimes should have a field day at the Marlborough Trotting Club’s meeting to-morrow, where she will meet small fields. The fact that she is one of the back-mark-ers at the start of each contest should ensure that she will begin correctly. Mabel Chimes won a race at the Westport Trotting Club’s meeting at Christmas time, and she is head and shoulders above any of the trotters she will meet off her own mark at Blenheim. She is owned by Mr J. Freeth, and is by Cathedral Chimes from Miss Mabel. She is in F. R. Hogg’s stable at BlenWINNER IN ADELAIDE. The good looking filly Helen Axworthv, who was recently sold to an Adelaide sportsman won the first race she started in for her new owner. Helen Axworthy is by Travis Axworthy from Helen Bingen, and was educated and developed at New Brighton by Mr PL F. C. Hinds. She was owned by Mr J. O'Brien, of Oamaru. who recently purchased Interlude for the same gentleman who has bought Helen Axworthy. A LIKELY NOVICE. The Westport enthusiast. T. L. Bennett. should be in the limelight at Marlborough to-morrow with Erin’s Beauty, who showed promising form at Christmas time. Erin’s Beauty ran third to Rackateer and Yietoreen in a mile and a half race at Westport on December 26. in 3min 38sec, and later in the same day she chased War Betty and Fearless home in a similar event. She is on the limit of the Trial and the Seaview Handicaps at the Marlborough Trotting Club’s meeting, and should more than pay her way. DISAPPOINTED. There was a buzz about Morello’s chance of winning the Papakaio Handicap at Oamaru on Saturday, and several experienced speculators were confident that the gelding would win The result of their operations sent Air A. J. Lawrence’s horse out third favourite. It was the first time M. C. McTigue had driven the gelding in a race, and when the field was sent on its journey Morello was badly placed, and although he was sixth to arrive at the winning post his performance was many removes from what was expected of him by several of his friends. TROTTING MEETING. Marlborough Club to Race To-morrow. LIKELY CANDIDATES. The Marlborough Trotting Club's annual meeting will take place on the Waterlea course to-morrow. One mile and a half.

IN THE SOUTH. Wingatui Candidates for Invercargill. (Special to the “ Star.”) DUNEDIN. Mav 14. The weather was mild and pleasant at Wingatui this morning, following a light frost over night. The recent strong winds have dried up the course and it is now in fairly firm condition, with a good surface. Reasonable luck should find the going satisfactory for the winter meeting if the weather does not become too unfavourable prior to the racing. This morning the horses engaged at Invercargill got through useful tasks. Chhota got a good break on Grand Finale when beginning at the mile post and led him all the way. Chhota ran the last seven furlongs in lmin 34sec. She has come on well during the last week or so. She also bears an improved appearance. Grand Finale was not hunted along to catch the mare during the gallop. He now holds his condition better than was formerly the Cherry Queen sprinted half a mile in 53sec and shaped well. Song Boy came away from a Last Dart mare when galloping over five furlongs in lmin 13sec. Gold Fox did strong work over a circuit and is in good order for his engagements. Foreign Star, who struck herself when working the previous day, was allotted easy pacing. She struck her off fore fetlock and made a wound that seems quite sound. Red Lance and Umtali strode over a circuit at a solid pace and covered the final seven furlongs in lmin 40s;C. Umtali seemed to be staying on best, after going about a mile and a quarter. Diamond Jack (Anderton) and King Vidas (Cooper) jumped the sod wall and double. The former was then pulled off. King Vidas completed the circuit but did not jump so well after losing his companion over the first three fences. Whipnot shaped well over the sod wall and double and then went on to complete a circuit, ending at th: double. He tired towards the finish. Other horses who worked included Kemal Pasha, Travenna, Unseen, Lvcidas, Toreador, Braw Lad, Ramo and Royal Pal. As an indication of how the wind has dried up the ground at Wingatui during the past few days, it may be ! mentioned that the plough track is fit ! for use from the half-mile post round past the mile post This means that it would provide good going for six or seven furlongs. The plough track carries a top dressing of tan between the posts mentioned and it is quite dry. The track has been lifted along the back stretch and hence will take j some time and favourable weather | before coming to use, prior to which it will also be treated to a top- | dressing of-tan. The Tractor gelding. Reminder, is being schooled over fences at Wingatui and shapes promisingly. Reminder has a fair amount of pace and should prove useful over jumps, as fencing seems to be the gift of the Tractor tribe. Worship and Gallant Fox were worked in company this morning. They are still a bit in the rough but are coming on. Gay Circle, Jack Horner and Desert Chief, also in Ware’s stable, also got through useful tasks The Bara long yearling, bought in Sydney, was due to arrive at Wingatui I to-day.
