THE SEVERED HAND.

Relic of Famous Fraud Case No Longer Preserved. The severed hand which figured in the sensational attempted fraud case in the ‘ ’eighties ” is no longer among the weird collection of exhibits which are kept in a dustv little upstairs room at the Christchurch Supreme Court. In recent years the police have taken charge of all exhibits when a case is finished, but prior to this arrangement they were left at the court and found their way into this room. The records show that the “ severed hand ” was preserved in methylated spirits and remained at the Court as a reminder of one of the most famous of unsolved cases in the history of the Dominion. But a diligent search under the collected coats, boxes and other objects which litter the floor, and on the dust-covered shelves, failed to unearth this famous relic. It is believed that it was thrown away when the twenty years required by law had elapsed.
