The Maddison Trophy Competition. SINGLES championship. The Maddison Trophy competition, the singles championship of the Christchurch Bowling Centre, will be commenced on Saturday, on the Barrington and Christchurch greens. Three rounds will be played, the first to start at 12.30 p.m., the second at 2 p.m. and the third at 3.45 p.m. The following Is the draw: Barrington Green. Sydenham (H. D. Drummond) a bye. Sumner (T. F. Chambers) a bye. Christchurch (G. Littlejohn) a bye. United (A. Rhodes-Williams) plays K.W.M.C. (J. C. Simpson). St Albans (G. L. Horne) plays Sunnyside (J. Callaghan). Shirley (W. J. Shearman) plays Beckenham (J. Morrison). Riccarton Racecourse (G. Reed) plays New Brighton (J. T. Bisman). Canterbury (R. Haworth) plays Lyttelton (D. J. Page). Christchurch Green. Cashmere (A. E. H. Christie) plays Papanui (Rev E. Bandy). Edgeware (R. Henry) plays Barrington (A. Archer). Ashburton (W. R. Lane) plays Spreydon <YV. Wardell). Opawa. (M. C. Harrington) playe Rakaia (R. Tatterson). R.S.A. (W. J. Chapman) a bye. Linwood (H. Wilson) a bye. Elmwood (H. B. Oakey) a bye. Belfast (H. Stevens) a bye. Shirley Club. Good ‘entries have been received for the mid-week tournament of the Shirley Bowling Club, to be held on Thursday. Play will begin at 9' a.m. and there will be five games of one hour and a quarter. The following teams have entered: Hayman (Elmwood), Smith (Beckenham), Hayward (Edgeware), Shaw (Canterbury), Stoneham (Redcliffs), Kershaw (Linwood), (Lifiwood), Munns (Canterbury), Renton (St Albans), Brass (St Albans), Dick (Shirley), (Shirley), Memmott (Sydenham), Stokes (Xew Brighton), Chapman (R.S.A.) and Cooper (Barrington). Champion Rinks. The champion of champions rinks competition will be continued on Saturday, on the Beckenham green. The third round will be started at 12.30 p.m. and the fourth round/at 3.15 p.m. The following is the draw: Belfast plays Cashmere. R.S.A. plays New Brighton. Christchurch plays Imperial. Beckenham plays Canterbury. St Albans Club. An enjoyable game was played between teams representing the St Albans Club and representatives of banks and professions on the St Albans green on Saturday. The green was in excellent condition and the weather was favourable for good bowls. In view of this a number of the matches were extended to 25 heads. The following are the results, St Albans skips mentioned first: Renton 27, Harris 26; Almond 20, Littlejohn 20; Queree 16, Roese 27; Brass 21, Atkinson 20; Penlington 32, Smithson 19; Jobberns 25, Maddren 25: Donald 20, Redpath 22. Totals —St Albans 161, Banks and Professions 159. Church Parade Held. The first annual bowlers’ parade took place on Sunday morning at St Mary’s Church, Addington. Over eighty bowlers and their wives attended. The le.ssons were read by Mr TI. Hopkirk. The preacher took for his text 1 Corinthians; 9-2-4; “Kiio\r ye not 'that they which run in a race, run all;’but one receivetli the prize, so run that ye may obtain.” The speaker said: ‘‘Fellow bowlers, in the name of our Chief Skip I welcome you in this House set apart for worship, confession and spiritual help.” The presence of such a large number, he said, went to prove that they believed that the world and human life was subject to Divine Control. Bowlers on the banks were always good players. They were very apt to criticise the man playing the bowl. He wa£ in wide, too strong or too short, and yet the player was doing his best. Was it not true that the very next day the critic might roll worse bowls than the man he bad been criticising? The teachings of Christ can be used safely.
