Prince’s Feather.

A Garden Corner.

r THE “ PRINCE’S FEATHER ” is a sentimental name to cover the identity of a handsome hardv flowering annual, rejoicing in the formidable cognomen of Amaranthus hypochrondriacus. Amaranthus is from Greek words meaning “ not to wither, in allusion to the lasting qualities of the flower bracts. There is a distinctive appearance about the crimson plumes of this annual that makes the appellation Prince’s Feather a very fitting one. It grows, where space and soil permits, into an upright bushy plant of three feet, its numerous branches terminating in erect spikes of crimson plumes. Other well-known members of the same Amaranthus family are the Cockscomb and the Love Lies Bleeding. These differ more in habit and shape than in character. All three are formed of the same grass seed-like bracts and all have the same bright red colour. The Prince’s Feather • comes from North America. It T. D. LENNIE.
