WOMEN ASSISTED.

Orders for Groceries Given Wives of Unemployed. In accordance with the arrangement made by the Mayor (Mr D. G. Sullivan, M.P.) with Adjutant Wood, of the Salvation Army, orders for groceries to the value of 3s 6d were distributed to a number of wives of unemployed men yesterday afternoon and again this morning. Immediately following the deputation to the Mayor yesterday. Adjutant Wood attended to 86 cases. This morning she was able to assist several other women, bringing the total cases dealt with by her up to approximately 100. Adjutant Wood stated this morning that she had distributed the main necessities to the applicants for assistance—tea, butter, sugar and bread. “ I knew pretty well all the women who came to me,” she added. “ They are people we have been helping all along, and we know they are up against it. Their plight, however, is just the same as thousands of others.” There was again a steady stream of people at the Central Relief Depot this morning, but there was no disturbance, though some, particularly the women, exhibited annoyance when informed that they must produce their rent books before their cases could be considered. It was explained by the director of the depot, Mr Macintosh, that most of the people dealt with this morning were merely re-registering, and the depot was issuing rations to the most necessitous cases only after investigation. FOOD FOR UNEMPLOYED. Prompted by the story in yesterday’s “ Star ” regarding the plight of the wives of unemployed, one woman bas already sent a dozen 21b loaves, half a dozen pounds of butter and 24 pounds ot sugar to Adjutant Wood, of the Salvation Army, for distribution among necessitous cases.
