The Rule of the Right.
Dear Sir, —I would like to know if a cyclist is protected by the law regarding what is known as the rule of the right, that is to say, does a cyclist give way to traffic on his left as well as his right, or has he any legal standing if he should be run down by traffic on his left? I myself find that motorists do not give way to me on either side, and while I admit that it is easier for a cyclist to give way, and that in Christchurch especially it would slow traffic up if motorists had to give way, I wish to know my legal position in the matter.—l *am, etc., CYCLIST.
The regulations provide that traffic must give way to traffic on the right. Although Christchurch at one time specifically excluded cyclists from this rule, it is questionable whether the by-law could have been upheld.—Ed., “ Star.”
