WOMAN BEHEADED.
Hitler Declines Mercy for Spies. EXECUTION CARRIED OUT. United Press Assn.—By Electrio Telegraph—Copyright. (Received February 19, 12.30 p.m.) BERLIN, February 18. Beautiful, golden-haired Baroness von Berg and Frau von Matzner, who were recently found guilty of espionage, were beheaded. Herr Hitler declined to extend mercy to them. An official announcement says that Baron Sosnowski and Fraulein von Jena were sentenced to life imprison ment. The beheading of two women, both of aristocratic Prussian families, is unprecedented in German history. It is understood that their offence was stealing the plans of the German General Staff ' for an invasion of Poland. The executioner wore the traditional evening dress and white gloves, and after each beheading exclaimed, “ Justice has been done.” Baron Sosnowski, the principal offender, seems likely to escape punishment, as he will probably be exchanged for three Germans who are now in a Polish prison on espionage charges.
