Women’s Division of the Farmers’ Union. COMPETITION RESULTS. (Special to the ** Star.”) ASHBURTON, February 17. At a meeting of the Women’s Division of the New Zealand Farmers’ Union, Mrs E. M. Begg, who presided, reported that fifteen housekeepers had been sent out during. the last three months. A demonstration on making lampshades was given by Mrs L. J. Strange, who was accorded a vote of thanks. Arrangements were made for a visit next month to the Ashburton woollen mills. The results of competitions were as follows: Flowers. Mrs W. Penney 1, Miss C. Chamberlain 2; fruit, Mrs Penney 1. Miss Macmillan 2. Mrs E. M. Begg 3: vegetables. Mrs G. Tait 1. Mrs Begg 2. Mrs Penney 3: toffee. Miss Macmillan 1, Mrs Macmillan 2, Mrs Penney 3. Infectious Diseases. There were no reports of infectious diseases in the Ashburton Borough during the week, but one case of diphtheria was reported from Rakaia. Mountaineering Club. Members of the Erewhon Mountaineering Club will make a trip to Mount Taylor, near Mount Somers, next week-end and will attend the Canterbury Mountaineering Club’s annual picnic- at Selwvn Gorge on March 10. Excursion to Timaru. The Fairfield freezing works employees held their annual excursion to Caroline Bay on Saturday. The special train carried about 300 and a most enjoyable day was spent at the seaside. Personal. Mr E. N. Johnston (county inspector) will leave Ashburton on Monday for his annual holidays. During his absence, Mr J. R. Richardson will act as county health officer.
