POPULAR PICTURE.

Beautiful Dance Ensembles in “ Dames.” All previous records in the presentation of scenes of glorious beauty and originality have been surpassed in “Dames,” the musical and dancing extravaganza, which began the second week of its successful season at the Crystal Palace Theatre on Saturday. “Dames” is a really outstanding film and satisfies every requirement of entertainment. There is a connected and extremely amusing story, an array of first-rate players, lilting music that lingers in the memory, and many beautiful dance ensembles that fit perfectly into the story and dazzle the audience with their originality. The whole show is original in conception and in Its presentation reflects the genius and thoroughness of the producer. Chief romantit interest is provided by Pick Powell and Ruby Keeler, while Joan Blondell, Zasu Pitts, Guy Kibbee and Hugh Herbert ably maintain the comedy side. The story deals with an eccentric millionaire who decides to devote his fortune to the uplifting of American morals, part of his plan being the suppression of the theatre. Kibbee and Zasu Pitts, as husband and wife, have decided hopes of substantial financial help from their uncle, but , unfortunately for them, their daughter (Ruby' Keeler) is in love with Dick Powell, the. “bad fruit of the family tree,” who has been disowned because of his ambition to go on the stage. How the eccentric .incle is persuaded to change his views makes an hilarious story. The “shorts” are excellent.
