FEW SALMON CAUGHT.

Run Expected to Start on Thursday. Salmon fishermen on the Waimakariri had better luck during the week-end than they have had in the earlier stages of the season. Seven or eight fish were caught at the mouth of the river, and one, a ten-pounder, was caught upstream at Halkett. An occasional salmon was also caught in the Rakaia, the best fish reported being one weighing 211 b. Although these salmon have been landed, the run has not yet started, but it is believed that, following the habits of previous years, the big rush of fish to the spawning grounds will start about Thursday next (February 21). A few well-conditioned trout, weighing between 41b and 51b, were caught during the week-end in the Selwvn, the successful anglers using small wet flies Waterweed is very thick in the Selwvn this season, and, with the river very low, fish are very hard to land.
