RAID ON HOTEL.
Gaming Charges Heard at Dunedin. Per Press Association. DUNEDIN, February 15. | The hearing of charges arising from raids by the police on several hotels early in the afternoon of January 26, the day on which there was considerable racing activity throughout the Dominion, was begun before Mr Bundle, S.M., in the Police Court this morning. The first charges taken were two against Mabel Quirk, wife of the licensee of the St Kilda Hotel, of using the kitchen of the hotel as a common gaming house. Robert Peddar Crawford, barman, was charged on two counts with using the bar of this hotel as a common gaming house, and Martin Quirk, licensee, with rising his premises as a common gaming house and also permitting them to be used for such purpQse. Evidence was given by Clara Eden, police matron, and Constable Cumming with respect to several bets made with Mabel Quirk and with the barman, Crawford. After evidence for the prosecution had concluded, the hearing was adjourned sine die.
