LYTTELTON NEWS.

Sequel to Accident at Rapaki. MOTORIST FINED. William Francis Ibbotson, of Geraldine (Dr Haslam) was charged in the Lyttelton Magistrate’s Court yesterday with negligently driving a motor-car on December 16, and also with failing to report an accident. Dr Haslam entered a plea of guilty on behalf of defendant, who was absent. 1 Sergeant D. Wilson said that defendant, accompanied by a young lady, was on his way from Christchurch to Corsair Bay, via Governor’s Bay, and at Rapaki his car somersaulted over an embankment. Defendant was pinned underneath, while the young woman was hanging out of the car when assistance arrived. There was no obstruction where the car went over, and the man who witnessed the accident calculated that the car was travelling at not more than twenty miles an hour. Defendant and his companion were both slightly injured, the young lady being attended to by a doctor in Christchurch. It appeared that defendant had been told by the management of an insurance company that it was not incumbent upon him to report the mishap to the police as there had not been a third party concerned. Mr H. A. Young, S.M., imposed a fine of £3 and costs on the charge of negligent driving, and the defendant was ordered to pay costs 10s on the other charge. , Yacht Pastime Returns.
