LICENSING BREACHES.

New Brighton Hotel Involved. Breaches of the Licensing Act involving the licensee of the New Brighton Hotel, Marie M’Cormack, the manager, Robert Louis M’Cormack, and a customer, Joseph Hulme, were heard before Mr E. D. Mosley, S.M., in the Magistrate’s Court this morning. The licensee, who was charged with opening the premises after hours for the sale of liquor, pleaded guilty and was fined 10s and costs: the manager, who pleaded guilty to unlawfully supplying liquor, was fined 20s and costs; and Hulme, the customer, who pleaded guilty to a charge of being on the premises after hours, was fined 10s and costs. Mr R. J. Loughnan represented the licensee and manager. Hulme’s explanation after leaving the hotel and being accosted by a sergeant of police was that he had visited the hotel before 6 o’clock and left a “ blue peter ” to be filled with beer, said Sub-Inspector Mac Lean, in outlining the case. The licensee was away in Timaru at the time and the man who was the owner of the hotel had been left in charge as manager When approached later he had been quite frapk about the position. The breach did not appear to be a serious one and the sergeant had said that the hotel had been well conducted since he had been stationed at New Brighton, added the sub-inspector.
