PIGEON FLYING.
The Avonside Racing: Pigeon Club commenced its young bird racing season on Saturday last, with a race from Culverden. The stationmaster liberated 38 "birds, representing eight owners, at 1 p.m. Heavy fog made flying conditions difficult. The winning bird, owned by Mr A. R. Vallance, flew the distance of 55 miles 73 yards in 2hr 21min. Following were the results:— yds per min. A. Vallance’s Happy Landing 687 G. Knowles’s No. 12 653 M. Williams’s Air Pilot 526 B. Stewart’s No. 2 507 S. Plumridge’s Blondie 418 A. Nicholson’s No. 313 414 W. Hall’s Logan Lad 395 H. Marriott’s No. 1495 394 A. Vallance won the nominated bird prize. Somerfleld Club. The Somerfleld Racing Pigeon Club completed the old bird season with a race from Kaikoura, fifteen birds being forwarded to Mr F. F. Flower, who liberated the birds at intervals of five minutes. The first bird went up at 8.41 and in fairly good flying conditions. The race resulted as follows: yds per L. Ockwell’s Dismiss 1177.3 R. Hodge’s Blue Admiral 1146.9 L. Ock well’s Wise Guy 1121.2 D.
