STREET APPEAL.

Assistance for Families of Returned Soldiers. Members of the Women's Executive of the Red Cross Society hope that with funds collected during their street appeal to-morrow they will be able to provide warm clothing and other winter comforts for necessitous families of returned soldiers. In past years there has been an excellent response to this worthy appeal and, with returning prosperity, there should be an even better response this year. Lady Wigram, chairman of the Women’s Executive, this morning explained the arrangements to a reporter. The collection will begin at 7.45 a.m. and will continue until 7 p.m. There will be men and women collectors busy throughout the city during the hours of the appeal. Each contributor will receive a small red cross flag to wear in his or her buttonhole. In addition to the appeal there will be two stalls in Victoria Square. One will be on the bank of the river and will be stocked with cakes and sweets. At the othei*, near the Cook statue, there will be sold anything and everything that has been given. There will also be a pedigree Cairn terrier which will be sold or auctioned. It has not yet been decided which method will be employed. It is hoped that all citizens will combine to help the families of the returned men who are finding it difficult to make ends meet.
