Man Convicted for False Pretences. Per Press Association. DUNEDIN. February 13. “ The only inference to be drawn is that it was an elaborate scheme of false pretences and that the whole affair was a fraudulent business.” said the Magistrate. Mr J. R. Bartholomew, in convicting Elwood Cuthbertson of 15 charges of false pretences and attempted false pretences in the Police Court this afternoon. “It looks as if he was preparing for a clean up and for disappearing to Australia before inquiries could be made.” the Magistrate continued. Cuthbertson was convicted on all 15 summary charges, and also on three major charges of false pretences involving amounts of more than £2. He was sentenced to 12 months’ hard labour, the Magistrate adding that his was the sort of fraud the public must be protected from. A fresh charge, one of stealing a car valued at £250, the property of Wan aka Motors, was held over for a week.
