BLACK MAGIC RITES.
English Graves Desecrated in India. CALCUTTA, February 5. The nocturnal desecration of two English graves at Singhbhum has resulted in the discovery of revolting black magic practices. The graves were those of H. Fordham, whose ashes were buried in a silver urn. and of F. Sharpley, whose body was given an earth burial. The deceased were accident victims. Both bones and ashes were used in the rites, as the remains of white men dying accidentally are regarded as efficacious in wizardry involving efforts to transform people into animals. Some of the ashes were sold to a criminal tribe in the hope of ensuring successful burglaries by throwing them against the wall of the house to be pillaged, and thus plunging its occupants into a deep slumber.
