NAME CHARGED.

Action by Canterbury Lily Circle. A meeting of the New Zert'and Lily Society was held in the Canterbury Horticultural rooms on Friday. The chairman. Dr T. Fletcher Telford, presided over a large attendance members. Pursuant to a notice of motion to discuss changing the name from that of “ Canterbury Lily Circle,” it was unanimously decided to alter the name to that of the ’New Zealand Lily Society.” It was felt by those p.uesent that, as the society now has members all over New Zealand, the name * c ,New Zealand Lily Society ” would describe its activities better than that of the old name ** Lily Circle.” A committee was formed to draft -.the constitution and rules for the society and to report to the next montlfclj' meeting. It was agreed by membvs that the society should continue Its close association with the Canterbu C v Horticultural Society as a lily section of the parent societv. Amongst the btooms shown was A, stem of l. ’ Maxi mow iezli, an Eastern. Asia lily after the type of L. Davidii. This lily is still rare and raised considerable interest amongst members. A genera*. discussion took* place amongst members with regard to the cultivation and hybridisation of lilies, and a good deal of the work done by members during this season appears to have been very successful. Several members were able to report that, for the first time in their experience L Tigrinum the common tiger lily, had set seed. This lily is usuallv propagated by bulbils that set on the stem at the apices of the leaves. Tn England, it is reported, it has never been known to set seed. The fact that it is doing so in New Zealand is felt to be due to the hot. dry summer. The financial report disclosed a satisfactory position of the society.
