GRASS FIRE AT SUMNER.

Shortly after 11 o’clock last night, a grass fire broke out on the lower slopes of the Scarborough Hill, Sumner, just above the tram terminus. Fortunately the flames were noticed by some residents in the early stages of the tire, and with the aid of sacks some young men had the fire well under control by the time the Fire Brigade arrived. The fire started near the Zig-zag track, running up the steep face of the hill, just above the end of Nay land Street. Owing to the barren nature of the soil, and the small shrubs in the locality, the fire did not have much opportunity to spread.
