"Magistrate’s Court Returns. LITTLE CHANGE SHOWN. (Special to the ” Star.”) ASHBURTON, January 10. The Ashburton Magistrate’s Court returns for the quarter ended December 31, 1934, show little variation when compared with those for the same quarter of 1933. The figures with those of the 1933 quarter given in parentheses are as follow:—Number of plaints en tered 100 (10S > ; total amount sued for. £709 0s 9d (£656 12s Sd) ; number of cases tried.. 74 (73) ; total amount claimed in cases tried, £417 2s Sd (£521 13s 7d) ; amount recovered in cases tried. £232 10s 5d (£405 los 9d) : number of arrests, 12 (11); number of criminal summonses, 28 (33) : children’s court cases, 7 ( —); sittings presided over by magistrate, 4 civil (s>, 4 criminal (4) ; sittings presided over by justices of the peace, 3 civil (5), 12 criminal (11); number of distress warrants issued. 1 (5); number of judgment summonses issued, 10 (10); summonses served by bailiff. 70 (71) ; civil summonses served by registered letter, 39 (36) ; criminal cases against males, 31 (42); females, 2 (1); miners’ rights issued. 1 (6) : civil fees paid in stamps. £66 6s (£97 4s) ; criminal fees paid in stamps. £8 (£lO 8s); fines paid in stampSi#£ls 15s (£77 15s). Royal Train. A large number of people congregated at the railway station at seven o’clock when the Royal train carrying the Duke of Gloucester passed through, with the object of securing a glimpse of his Royal Highness, but they were disappointed. The train arrived, oil schedule time and after the engine-' had replenished their water tanks and gas containers on the kitchen car had received attention, the train left on its southern journey after a halt of about fifteen minutes. Only members of the police guard and other officials came out on to the platform which was closed to the general public. Lodge Meeting. The monthly meeting of Court Pride of Ashburton, Juvenile Foresters, was held last evening, when the C.R. <Bro 11. Baker) presided. One member was reported to be on the sick list. Nominations were received for the office of J. 8., and Bro A. S. Eyles was elected. The retiring president (Bro C. Dellow' installed Bro J. Cannan as president and Bro R. Barnett as vice-president. Personal. Mr A. 11. Grant, manager of the Ashburton branch of the Bank of New South Wales, is on his annual leave Mr L. C. Christie, of the Dunedin office and formerly of the Ashburton staff is relieving officer. Staff-Bandmaster G. 11. Dickens, conductor of the Salvation Army National Staff Band of the Melbourne headquarters, will pay a visit to Ashburton next week-end. He will take part in the Sunday services in conjunction with the Salvation Army Band. Messrs G. W. Armitage and C. S. Smith, members of the CanterburyEducation Board, paid a visit to the Borough School to-day in connection with repairs at present being carried out at the school and proposed improvements to the school grounds.
