Men Hurt in Tree-felling Accident. (Special to tlie “ Star.”) ASHBURTON, January 9. Two men were injured during treefelling operations at Rakaia yesterday afternoon, when they were struck by a falling branch. Mr Frederick Charles Muir, . aged twenty-four, of Barrhill. sustained fractured ribs, and Mr Victor Leaman, aged thirty-four, also of Barrhill, suffered injuries to his back. It was reported to-day that the condition of both men was satisfactory. General Godley’s Visit. Major-General Sir Alexander Godley and Lady Godley, who will arrive in Ashburton to-morrow, will be tendered a civic welcome at a dinner given by the Ashburton Borough and County Councils in the evening. The visitors will also attend a gathering arranged by the Ashburton branch of the Returned Soldiers’ Association later in the evening in the Tancred Street Hall. General and Lady Godley will leave for the north on Friday. Swimming Club’s Carnival. A meeting of the Ashburton Amateur Swimming Club was held last evening, Mr A. L. Jones presiding. The programme for the jubilee carnit-al to be held on February 9 was arranged and the following sub-committees were set up: Display lighting, Messrs A. Coker (convener), K. Moore and G. Good; advertising, Messrs A. L. Jones (convener), H. M’Elrea and Good; officials, Messrs M’Elrea and Coker (convener). A souvenir programme would include a history of the club. It was stated thu‘ the life-saving classes commenced under the direction of Miss Helen Hawke were being well supported. Miss Hawke was accorded a vote of thanks for her efforts and she was made a life member of the club. Mr Coker donated a trophy for the open dive. It was reported that the club was in a healthy state financially and that there had been a considerable in crease in the membership. It was agreed to write to the Ashburton Amateur Centre expressing its appreciation of a donation of timber and of its interest in the general welfare of swimming in Ashburton.
