Notes on Yesterday’s Play.

(Special to the “ Star.”) AUCKLAND, This Day. A striking feature iu post-section play in the singles championship of the New Zealand Bowling Association on Tuesday was the rapid disappear* ance of so many champions who had signally distinguished themselves on many previous occasions. The section play on Monday had reduced the original 314 to 77 and at the end of the second day-, playing on the twolife sy-stem, only 15 of these 77 survived, three as two-lifers and tw-elve as one-lifers. These will continue next Wednesday or as soon thereafter as they are released from the pairs and rinks, as two clays will now be devoted to section play- in pairs and four day’s to the rinks.

The spectators w-ere entertained with thrilling contests, but w-ere still further surprised when they- learned of the spectacular defeats of other wellknown play’ers on some of the othei greens in use. Carlton green was made the headquarters, but 48 of the 77 were accom modated at Mount Eden, Onehunga and Epsom, 16 on each, and the solitary two-life survivor at each of these greens after four rounds had been played w-as transferred to the Carlton green for the fifth round. The draw for the continuation of the singles competition next Wednesday is:—Bourke (Hawera) a bye; Englebretsen (Napier) v. Russell (St Heliers) ; Routley- (Kelburn) v. Sunde (Glen Eden); Letham (Ponsonby) v Somervell (Ponsonby) ; Coburn (Ponsonby) v. M’Connell (Devonport); Keatley (Rocky Nook) v. Squire (Ha-w-era) : Wellings (Hataitai) v. Richards (Devonport); Luscombe (West End, New Ply-mouth) v. Livingstone (Onehunga). The first named tfiree in this draware the only two-lifers left. (Yesterday’s play Is reported on Pagre 14.)
