ATHLETICS.

Second Round of Inter-ciub Competition. MORE KEEN RACING. The racing was again keen to-day, when the inter-club competitions of the Canterbury Centre of the New Zealand Amateur Athletic Association were continued on the Lancaster Park south ground. The competitions entered the second round, and interest, centred on the meeting of Technical and Varsity in group A, both these clubs having been heavy point-getters in the first round in different groups. The track was in good order though a trifle on the hard side, and the times were again good. There was some good racing in the 440yds event, in which T. G. *Broadway, New Zealand champion, and Dennis Anderson, 880yds record holder, each returned 53sec, three-fifths of a second short of the Canterbury standard. Running with a slight easterly behind him, J. B. Macfarlane, New Zealand sprints champion, won the 100yds event, in his section in the best time returned so far this season. He cantered over the distance in 10 l-3sec to beat G. C. Gordon by a good yard. C. S. Barrell, who has been a consistent performer this season, was a yard further back, third. C. H. Matthews, Technical, again had to make most of his own pace in the mile, which he won in his second best time to date—(min 25 4-ssec. The Canterbury standard is 4min 35sec.

A high standard was again set in the field events. An outstanding competitor was J. Campbell (Technical), who threw the javelin 146 ft 2in, ift 2in better than the standard.
