Small Islands to be Searched for Ulm. WOULD PLANE BE DAMAGED? (Continued from Page 1). (Received December S, 2 p.m' HONOLULU. December 7. The Admirals’ Conference decided to continue the search for Ulm until hope is definitely abandoned, using all the planes and vessels available. The submarines will remain on patrol and the destroyers have been ordered to Pearl Harbour to refuel before going out 400 miles north-east to-morrow. The heavy planes will resume their flights into the south-west for 250 miles to-morrow, if the weather improves. The Coastguard cutter Itasca rushed here this morning as the mate was stricken with appendicitis. There was no surgeon on board because the vessel hurried to sea when Ulm sent his S.O S. Commander J. S. Baylis, Coastguard chief here, is leaving soon with a patrol of three ships. They will travel westward from Kauai to the small islands and reefs. Aviators at a conference in Admiral Yarnell’s office said that Ulm’s plane would not float over two days. They agreed that Ulm was short of his goal and off his course to the north. The consenus of opinion was that the plane would be damaged on landing. Admiral Yarnell has issued the following statement: “Mr Ulm encountered head winds which held him back and sent him off his course to the right A radius of 350 miles from Honolulu has been covered thoroughly by the Coastguard and navy vessels and army and navy planes. Visibility was good and the plane would have been sighted if it were afloat. The airmen felt that the chances of the plane being afloat were very slight.
