MYSTERY COMEDY.
“ Murder on the Blackboard ” at Majestic. “ Murder on the Blackboard,” an entertaining mystery comedy, starring Edna May Oliver and James Gleason, heads the current programme at the Majestic Theatre. As Hildegarde Withers, a schoolmistress with ideas about crime detection, Edna May Oliver scores a decided success. She fairly lives the part and carries the play along divertingly and successfully, her quaint reactions to the unusual situations and the acidity of her repartees in her dealings with James Gleason being highly entertaining. Gleason, as Inspector Oscar Piper, also scores heavily. He is the American detective of fictiort to the life, and “plays up” to Edna May Oliver delightfully. The main picture is preceded by an interesting programme of “shorts,” the most arresting being the newsreel showing the Duke of Gloucester’s arrival in Sydney.
