KILLING OF STOCK.
Investigation Info Best Method. The use of mechanically operated instruments for killing sheep is to be investigated by the executive of the Society for the Prevention of Crueltv to Animals, in accordance with a resolution passed at a meeting held last evening. Mr A. W. MacGillivray presided. From information to hand the society is to determine the best method of killing. A letter was received from the Royal Society, London, which stated that in England and Wales the Slaughter of Animals Act, 1933, compelled the use of mechanically operated instruments to stun cattle, including calves and pigs, but did not include sheep. The majority' of local authorities had contracted into the Act by special resolution, and with few exceptions sheep in England and Wales were stunned either by means of a captive bolt or bullet-firing instrument, or, in larger establishments, by means of the electric stunner.
After some discussion the matter was referred to the Executive Committee.
