HANDICAPS.

Wellington Racing Club’s Meeting. Per Press Association. WELLINGTON, December 3. Following are handicaps for the Trentham Royal Welcome meeting:— HAEREMAI HIGH-WEIGHT HANDICAP, of 300 sovs. One mile and a quarter.

NEW STARTING GATE.

English Club Tries South African Success. The executive of the Northolt racecourse, the headquarters of pony racing in England, has been. experimenting with a type of starting gate which is new to English racecourses. Termed the “ Benjamin Barrier,” this starting gate has been in operation for nine years on the Milnerton Racecourse, near Cape Town, and it is claimed to have reached perfection. The barrier is of six strands, and it is operated by the pressure of the starter’s foot on a concealed lever, thus doing away with anticipation of the starter’s intentions. When the lever is depressed, the barrier swings outwards and upwards, completing a semi-circle at such a speed that it is impossible for the horses to become entangled. Should a fractious horse dash into the strands, they become disconnected. Constructed of steel and phosphorbronze, the gate has no unsightly posts or overhead wires, the machine at each side of the course being connected by an underground control cable. It is stated that in the nine years of its service in South Africa there has been no accident in connection with the use of the machine. it ACI NO FIXTURES. December 8, 10—Woodville D.J.C.
