Better Programmes.
Dear Sir,—The members of the Radio Board are due to retire this month and I think that it would be an excellent opportunity for the Government to appoint members more in touch with listeners. While I am in favour of having a unified and co-ordinated system, I think it a mistake not to have on the board someone who is in touch with the common people, and who has some idea of what they want. It has been said that high-class programmes will improve the musical taste of the people, but this is just a fallacy, for thousands of listeners simply switch their sets off when classical programmes are broadcast. If the Government does not intend to make any real change in the composition of the board, it would be better to abandon the board idea altogether and make the radio stations the direct responsibility of the Postmaster-General. Then we could have someone to approach and if his replies w’ere not satisfactory we could deal with him at election time.—l am. etc., LISTENER.
