LAWN TENNIS.

Better Form in Senior Competition. SHORTS GAIN POPULARITY. A decided improvement in the standard of tennis was noticeable in the senior competition of the Canterbury Lawn Tennis Association at Wilding Park this afternoon. The most notable match of the day was that between H. A. Barnett (Canterbury College) and T. Rhodes-Williams (United III.), won by Barnett after a very hard struggle, but a number of the other matches were hard-fought and interesting to watch. Rhodes-Williams showed much better form than he has exhibited so far this season, and his excellently-judged driving had Barnett running during the early part of the match. There were many interesting rallies, but Barnett was not stroking well at the start, lifting his shoulder and playing the ball short. Had it not been that Rhodes-Williams made a number of mistakes with his volleys, the United player would have won in straight sets. As it was, he led 6-3, 5-2, before Barnett began to make an impression. It was a marvellous recovery. He won the second set 8-6, and ran away with the third, 6-0. Canterbury College won two of the other singles, Barrer beating Sheppard and Duffield beating Tait. The latter match was hard-fought, Duffield making a very good showing in the last two sets.

Splendid driving was seen in the meeting of Seay and Cant in the match between Lin wood and United 11. Cant was in good form and covered the back-line splendidly. lie kept a good length with his drives t& the corners, and made usp of some good lobbing when Seay came to the net. Seay made a number of mistakes in the final stages. It was noticed that shorts are gaining in popularity amongst the senior players. To-day, Cant, Barrer, Armstrong and Young all favoured the Scores were as follows: SENIOR GRADE. Canterbury College v. United 111. Singles. If. A. Barnett beat T. Rhodes-Wil-liams, 3-6. S-6, 6-0. B.
