RACING NOTES.

® H SI Btl HI SI IS IS SI a SI IS H IB Si Efl @ S B yo.MIN'ATIOXS for the Wellington Racing Club’s meeting on December 15 close at eight o’clock this evening. * * * * Nominations for the Hororata Racing Club’s meeting on its own course on December 15 close at eight o’clock this evening at the C.J.C. offices. General entries for the Auckland Racing Club’s meeting on Decemb r 26 and 28, January 1 and 2, will close at 5 p.m. to-day. * * * * Weights for the Auckland Cup will be declared on Monday. * * * * Nominations for the Westland Racing Club’s meeting on December 26 and 29 close at 8.30 p.m. next Wednesday. * * * * Forfeits for the Great Northern Derby and Foal Stakes, also for the Royal Stakes, are due before 5 p.m. to-day. * * * j* Acceptances for the second day of the Feilding and Winton meetings will appear in the “ Christchurch Times ” 'tomorrow. DERBY CONTENDER. Gay Blonde had her first real test in a handicap event over a middle distance when she ran in the Alison Cup last Saturday. She endeavoured to win from end to end, but the pace she set told on her in he straight and she commenc?d to shift about, eventually being beaten into third place. She was defeated by two good horses, and, seeing she carried 61b over weight-for-age, she was by no means disgraced, and she should be hard to dispose of in the Great Northern Derby and weight-for-age races at Ellerslie at Christmas time. LED ALL THE WAY. Dubarry, who won the Rakino Handicap at Ellerslie on Monday, showed vast improvement on her effort on the same course on Saturday, when she was prominent early and then faded out. On Monday she commenced smartly and was never afterwards headed, winning with ridiculous ease by five lengths. Dubarry is by Chief Ruler from Jenolan, by Valais from Breakaway, and was bred by Mr J. Donald, of the Westmere Stud. She cost her present owners 625gns as a yearling at Trentham last January, and they should have little difficulty in getting back their outlay. NOW HAS A NAME. The name of Token was applied for by E. C. M’Dermott for his three-year-old bv Polazel from Precious, but was not allowed. The gelding has now been named Tamaki. He is a candidate for the Lagmhor Plate at Ashburton to-morrow. UNLIKELY TO RACE AGAIN. . Miss Dazzle suffered her first reverse in a cross-country event when she was beaten in the Spring Steeplechase at Ellerslie on Saturday. She made a great showing for about two miles and a half, only being beaten at the first obstacle on the top of the hill the last time. She broke down just before ascending the hill on that occasion, but kept on to complete the course. She was very lame when she returned to the birdcage, and it is stated that she is unlikely to race again. This is very bad luck for her connections, for it is certain that the best had not been seen of her during the time she has been racing. TROTTING MEN AND GALLOPERS There is a decided trotting flavour about the Lagmhor Plate to be run at Ashburton to-morrow. Tamaki and Liberate are owned by E. 0. M’Dermott, F. Holmes trains Desirable, E. N. Kennerley trains Pompeii for J. J. Kennerley, J. S. Shaw trains Gas Mask, while J. Tomkinson, son of the late W. J. Tomkinson, has three of his team engaged. * * ife * Impossible and Coalpit, two members of the team of A. S. Ellis, are spelling. * * * * S. Barr states that Quietly is, at present, a doubtful smarter to-morrow. BRACKETED. Liberate and Tamaki will be bracketed in the Lagmhor Plate at Ashburton to-morrow. Both are trained by J. Tomkinson for E. C. M’Dermott. X.Z. MEN ABROAD. Although J. Holt did not fare as well as he doubtless hoped, the close of the main spring racing campaign in Melbourne found him heading the winning trainers’ list with eight wins, eleven seconds and four thirds. T. Platt (New Zealand), S. Murphy and Lou Robertson (formerly of New Zealand) are equal ne?:t with seven wins apiece. J. T. Jamieson had five wins in Melbourne, while the veteran D. J. Price has had five, including one deadheat. H. Skidmore and F. Dempsey share the lead among the jockeys with thirteen wins apiece. These figures have reference only to the metropolitan area of Melbourne. HAS PACE. Life Guard was drawn wide out in both his contests at the Takapuna meeting, but he ran two good races, and the son of Chief Ruler will be heard of again. On the first day he hit the front before the straight was reached, and nothing had a chance with him, despite the fact that he was giving everything else in the race from 51b to 261 b. Op Monday he again began well, and Dancing Lady was the only one to lead him round the turn and beat him home. Life Guard, who is Only a three-year-old. is a very bold galloper, and he will be entitled to respect in any hack sprint company he takes on. 11. RAMA’S TEAM. Six horses arrived at Riccarton from the North Island yesterday to join H Rama’s team. They comprised Moorwyn, Lady Lucas (Lucullus—Country Air), Tooley Street (Surveyor—Cantrip) and three two-year-olds, two by Vaals from Country Air and Country Picnic respectively. CHANCE FOR COTNCIDENC,E. J. S. Shaw, in addition to his own team, will take Southdown to Ellerslie for A. M’Aulav. who desires to go south with other members of his team. Last vear. Shaw took Minerval to Ellerslie j for F. Holmes and Minerval won the ! cup.

KILTOWYN* AS A STAYER. Discussing the Auckland Cup prospects of Kiltowyn, the Auckland writer, “ Spearmint,” says that his recent performances show that he is in his best form again. There is no doubt about his class and the intriguing question is whether he will be able to run out the two miles of the cup distance. He is by a great . stayer, Kilbroney. from Towyn, by Lucullus from Congress, by Hierarch from Te Huinga, by Hotchkiss from the imported mare Sunningdale (20), by Hampton. This is one of the outside families, but it has produced Periosteum (Ascot Gold Cup), Tagalie (D.erbv), Heaume, whose name appears in the pedigree of the French champion, Brantome, St Florian. grandsire of Lucullus, Hapsburg, Stornoway and Duncan Grey. Its best-known representatives in Australia and New Zealand are Tressady. Queen Soorak, Hallowmas, Tukia, Tamatete. Curie and the descendants of Rubina, including Machine Gun and Huntique. The descendants of Sunningdale have mainly been remarkable for speed. She was dam of Cavalry, Calibre and Muskerdale, while her daughter, Te Huinga, was dam of Tahua, who produced Tamatete and Tukia. Towyn was a sister to the speedy Dave, and Congress. Towyn and Kiltowyn were all bred at Cambria Park, as was Hierarch. the sire of Congress, who was by I Cyrenian from Miss Annie, from the same family as Nightly. This represents brilliant speed, but. apart from that, Kiltowyn has two strains of Musket with the stoutness of the breeding of Lucullus and St Simon and Springfield coming through Cyrenian, sire of Hierarch. Plis lines strongly suggest that, on breeding at least, Kiltowyn should not be troubled by the distance. TO RACE IN NORTH. J. S. Shaw intends to race Rebel Star, Seafox and Maroha at Trentham next month with Auckland to follow, though Maroha is not yet certain of the trip to Ellerslie. P. V. Mason may follow a similar programme with Variant and ITostis. FOR WEST COAST. A. S. Ellis hopes to have Wino and Importance racing on the West Coast during the holidays. Skv Rover, who is trained by T. H. Gillett for Mr D -H. Roberts, of Greymouth, may also race on that circuit. Back Lead and Imperial Spear are also booked for the Coast. This pair is trained by D. Hastings. E. S. Jennings will take Arrow’maid and Arrowin across for the same circuit. * * 3|C The Hurunui Turf Club will take nominations on Monday for its annual non-totalisator meeting to be held on December 26. WAS A GIFT. Distinguished, who is making his debut at Feilding to-day, is a two-year-old chestnut colt by Lackham from the Bisogne mare Great Lady, a two-year-old winner for Mr C. T. Keeble. Distinguished was a gift from Mr W. T. Bailey to Mr J. A. Nash, M.P., who has since sold him to Messrs A. G. Rowlands and M. D. Gillion, of Palmerston North. DOING WELL. Reports from Wanganui state that the motherless foal out of Eulogy, now three weeks old. is doing well under special care at Koatanui Stud. GOLDEN HAIR. Golden Hair is working again at Hawera. She was light in condition when she returned, but it is hoped to build her up in her home quarters. A NGLO-A M E RICAN DOUBLE. The American owner, Mr Victor Emanuel, who is retiring from participation in English racing this year, brought off a good double on October 6. At Kempton Park (England) his j Blandford horse Statesman won the ‘ * Duke of York Handicap, while at J Jamaica, New York State, his High j Time filly Miss Merriment won the I Interborough Handicap.
