CROSSING SMASHES.

Two Young Women Badly Injured. Per Press Association. WHANGAREI, November 29. Two young women, Phyllis Perkins, of Whangarei. and Gwenneth Dahl, or Kaeo, when motoring from Kaeo this afternoon were struck by a train at a level crossing near Hikurangi. Both were seriously injured and were taken to hospital. The car was completely smashed. Head Master’s Escape. (Special to the “ Star.”) AUCKLAND, November 29. A narrow escape from serious injury was experienced by Mr R. C. D. Lightbourne, head master of the Huntly District High School, last evening when he was crossing the railway line at Ravner’s Road in his sedan motorcar. The car was struck by the 8.30 outward-bound goods train to Glen Afton. Mr Lightbourne did not see the approach train owing to a high fence which obstructed his view. The two front wheels of the motor-car were on the railway line when the train struck it. The force of the impact caused the car to turn round and the train carried it a short distance along the track, but did not stop. Mr Lightbourne, who was the only occupant of the car, suffered a cut on the forehead and shock. He was attended by Dr A. B. Jameson and was able to go home.

Extensive damage was done to the front of the car.
