IN SECRET ROOM.
Men Betrayed by Loud Breathing. LICENSING RAID. (Special to the " Star.”) LONDON', October 2. The sound of breathing behind a ■wall led to the discovery by Civic Guards searching licensed premises in Cork of a secret room. When Thomas M’Auliffe, publican, of Merchant Street, was summoned at Cork District Court the police stated that there was a long delay in admitting them. At first they found nobody on the premises. Then they examined the floors and walls. One section of the wall gave slightly, but there was no indication of any door, and they were about to leave when they heard someone breathing behind the wall. Finally, the publican’s wife called: “ Come out, Dicks.” Two concealed bolts were then drawn, a section of the wall swung aside, and out stepped / thirteen men and a dog. “ The dog is not summoned,” said the police superintendent. The publican was fined a total of £5 for breaches of the licensing laws, and the thirteen men found on the premises after hours were fined 5s each.
