LEWIS PASS ROAD.
Progress League May Make Inspection. A meeting of the Canterbury Progress League was held in the Chamber of Commerce last evening. Mr F. Coop presided. Letters from the Buller Progress L,eague and the 1-lanmer Springs Progress League stated that both bodies were dissatisfied with progress on the Lewis Pass Road. Jt was felt that the with the West Coast hnd 'would provide employment for many work less in the South Island. Mr Coop explained that some years ago an investigation had been made and lie thought the League might press for quicker progress. It was of paramount importance for quick transport and Tl>e meeting recommended tha’t the Highways Committee of the Progress League should pay a visit, of inspection to the Lewis Pass Road works and report at the next ineeting. It was announced that a meeting would be held in the Chamber of Commerce next. Thursday at 7.30, when the proposals of the Irrigation Committees of the Chamber of Commerce and the Progress League would be submitted. It had been arranged that the speech of Mr J. H. Holford (chairman) be broadirrigation was about to be begun by the Public Works Department in South Canterbury and the Irrigation Committee felt that the time had come when something should be done in this district.
