MAORIS AND LIQUOR.

Petition Alleged to be Old One. Per Press Association. WANGANUI, This Day. The secretary of the Maniapoto Maori Council, Mr Witini, has written to the Rev A. L Seamer, superintendent of the Methodist Home Mission De partment, protesting against the secrecy attaching to the withdrawal of the petition recently presented to Parliament, allegedly on behalf of the Maori people in the King Country, urging the licensing of hotels in that territory. , , Mr Witini forwards a declaration signed and witnessed, alleging that it is eight vears since some of the natives signed the petition, believing then that it was in favour of Prohibition. It is also alleged that other names on the petition include a number who have been dead for several years. It is suggested that the petition was part of an old one drawn up eight years ago. Mr Witini further alleges that promises were made that land would be bought for the benefit of Natives if licenses were granted. Another statement signed by King Koroki Tawhiao and other chiefs in the King Country confirms their strong opposition to licenses.
