Sir William Hunt arrived from the north this morning. The Revs E. P. Blamires and J. Pate were arrivals from the North Island this morning. The lion W. Hayward. M.L.C., and the Hon G. M'lntyre, M.L.C., arrived from the north this morning. Messrs P. M’Millan (Dunedin). G. Patterson (Mosgiel) and L. A. Jenkins ( London) are guests at the Clarendon Hotel. Guests at Warner’s Hotel include Messrs M. Gray (Wellington). W. D Orbell (Fairlie), T. C. Robinson and A. C. Robinson (Mount Pleasant). Mr R. W. Hawke, M.P.. was a passenger from Wellington this morning Messrs T. M. Rutherford (Parnassus), J. M. Fraser (Dunedin). E. Xalder (Auckland) and P. B. Broad (Wellington) are staying at the United Service Hotel. Messrs W. G. Barnard (London), F. W. May (Wellington). J. R. Upton (Ashburton), R. Graham and 11. Neville (Greym ith) are staying at the New City Hotel. The death of Mr C. IT. Tripp, of Timaru. was referred to last night at a meeting of the Canterbury Philosophical Institute. Mr R. Speight spoke of Mr Tripp’s long association with the institute. The meeting then stood for a moment in silence.
A Wellington message says that Mr K. L. IJsmar, the representative of the “ Auckland Star ” in the Parliamentary Press Gallery, has been appointed to represent the United Press Association during the New Zealand tour of the Duke of Gloucester. A motion of sympathy with the relatives of the late Dr F. G. Gibson was passed at the meeting of members of the Christchurch branch of the Returned Soldiers’ Association last night.. The president (the Rev F. T. Read) said that Dr Gibson had been a member and a true friend of the associaThe Ellesmere Land Drainage Board yesterday appointed Mr G. L. Comer secretary-treasurer to the board, in succession to Mr James M’Kenzie, who has resigned after twenty-two and a half years’ service. Mr Comer has not had previous appointments with local bodies, but his father, Mr C. Comer, was well-known as clerk to the Ilalswell Road Board, the Ileathcote Road Board. and the Ilalswell County Council for many years. During the last nine years Mr G. L. Comer has been doing commercial work, representing a Christchurch firm in the North Island, and lately in Christchurch. He is a returned soldier, having held a commission during the Great War. Mr M’Kenzie will conclude his service to the board early in December, and Mr Comer will then take up his appointment. The board decided to grant Mr M’Kenzie three months’ leave on full salary in recognition o i his long term.
