EQUIPMENT NECESSARY.
Considerable expenditure on modern equipment for the Engineering School at Canterbury College will be inevitable in the near future, stated Professor P. H. Powell yesterday to former students and College officials, at the presentation of a portrait of the late Professor R. J. Scott to the school. Professor Powell explained that it had been the greatest moment of JProfessor Scott’s life when the Engineering School had been recognised by the University of New Zealand as the only fullyequipped engineering centre in the Dominion. That standard had been kept up as well as possible, but during the depression there had been a slowing down and little new machinery had been installed. In 1924-5 the Government had made a grant of £IO,OOO, but since that time there had not been much money to spend on necessary supplementing and replacing of equipment. In the past the equipment of the school would have challenged comparison with that in any similar institution in the Empire. It was essential that that high standard be maintained.
