LOVE OF BEAUTY.
The love of beauty is not restricted to women for in addition to men having such a trait it is shared with the lower animals, according to Mr R. Speight, curator of the Canterbury Museum.
Lecturing on precious stones at the museum this morning, Mr Speight said that the love of precious stones was seen even in the lower animals. lie pointed out that crocodiles swallowed pretty stones from the river bottoms, w T hile the moa had made a practice of swallowing white and red stones, although to some extent they were used as an aid to digestion. He added that bower birds ornamented their runs with pretty stones. That love of beauty was seen not only in the human race but in the lower animals, and it was possible that human beings inherited that special love from the animals.
