ANNUAL APPEAL.
St John Ambulance Association.
The SBt John Ambulance Association is busy making arrangements for the annual street appeal on Thursday. The necessity of securing funds to carry on the work is acute, and its claims upon the public are such that if they were fully realised the response would be far more generous than in the past, and so relieve the organisers of much trouble and anxiety. From the last issue of the “St John Ambulance Review,” a summary of the work done in Christchurch district may be quoted. For the year ended last February the ambulances responded to 399.1 calls, about 11 per. day. In spite of such a number of calls only 325 donations were received, so that 3668 of th >se who were attended failed to contribute. The ambulances travelled 41,160 ltiilee at a cost of £2299. The total amount received in donations was £139 13s 2d. Christchurch city, which was responsible fur 2975 calls, gave in donations only £69 16s Bd. If the great work is to be carried on successfully the public must support it, and the association is this year doing all it possibly can to realise its slogan “1000 collectors for £1000.” Such a sum would mean an even greater and better service and give relief to the officials from financial worries that impede the work.
