Originally tithes were the tenth part Df an income, which was payable for -he maintenance of the parish priest. Later they represented gifts to the 'hurch in land. Either the land was liven entirely, or a proportion—generalv one-tenth —of the produce of the land vas given. When the land was sold the purchaser paid less and the seller received less, because the Church held a tithe-rent charge. The charges, which had been in operation for centuries, were legalised by various Acts of Parliament.
