City Council Considers Request. GENERAL BUSINESS. The Christchurch City Council met last, evening; present: The DeputyMayor (Councillor J. K. Archer; and Councillors T. H. Butterfield, J. S. Barnett, O. T. Thurston, Mabel B. Howard, ■J. Mathison, A. E. Armstrong, H. T. J. Thacker, F. T. Evans, M. E. Lyons, T. Milliken, T. Andrews, J. W. Beanland, W. Hayward, M.L.C., and E. H. Andrews. The financial statement showed that of the general rate of £113.255 levied tor the current year, £SBOO 10s Sd had been collected, leaving £107,385 Os 4d outstanding. The Registrar of Canterbury College advised that the following resolution had been passed at a conference called to consider the question of finance for the Museum: “That this meeting is m favour of authority being obtained by the Canterbury College Council to raise the sum of £2OOO per annum from local bodies in Canterbury, such amount to be allocated among the Canterbury local bodies on a valuation basis.” The letter stated that the motion was adopted on the understanding that the question of the basis of the allocation of the amount of £2OOO per annum among the various local bodies should be referred to a sub-committee. The letter was received. Papanui Memorial Sail. The Finance Committee reported that he Papanui Memorial Hall Committee had reported that the deficiency for the financial year ended on March 31 was £l6 17s lid. of which the council was liable for three-fifths, amounting to £lO 2s 9d. Payment of that amount .iad been authorised by the committee. Permit Declined. The Town Planning Committee reported that an application had been received for permission to erect a shop on a section situated at 49. Langdown Street, St Martins. As the section was situated in an area which had been zoned for residential purposes, the committee had declined io issue the required permit. Electricity Supply. On the recommendation of the Electricity Committee, the council approved of an agreement providing that the Municipal Electricity Department should take over the supply of electricitv to the Avon, Bromley and Mount Pleasant ridings of the Heatheote. County. Tenders. The tender of J. E. Watson and Co., Ltd.. Invercargill, of £3S 14s 9d, was accepted for the supply of dog collars tjr 1935. , For the supply of aerial cable, the tender of Richardson, M’Cabe, of £slo 14s 2d, was accepted. The tender of J. and W. Jamieson and Son. of £24. was accepted for the erection and dismantling of scaffolding at the Sydenham Post Office, rendered necessary by the contract let for the cleaning and repairing of the clock. Erection of Hoardings. Permits Were granted for the erection of hoardings on Oxford Terrace on the frontage of Wilson's bakery at the corner of Montreal Street (subject to necessary advertising), on Oxford Terrace near the Bridge of Remembrance and on the property of Miss R. E. Aldridge, Waltham Road. Applications in respect of three sites were refused. The areas were: Cornet of Bell vue Avenue and Papanui Road, corner of Cashel Street and Ollivier s Road and on Ferry Road east of the Alexandra Hall.

New Brighton Council,

The New Brighton Borough Council met in the Council Chambers last night. The Mayor (Mr E. A. M. Leaver) presided

The Mayor reported that the number of men in the borough dependent on charitv through their refusal to go to the Ashley Camp was steadily diminishing. Originally the number was about eighty-eight and at present was only A* communication was received from the Commissioner of Unemployment stating that in transferring relief workers to the Ashley River camp there was no deliberate intention on the part of the board to slight the council. The Deputy-Controller and AuditorGeneral wrote stating that in his repc»rt upon the council’s accounts the inspector had drawn attention to the fact that those members of the staff who prepared the unemployment scheme 5 wages also paid the men. This practice couid

not he regarded as satisfactory from an audit viewpoint and it was suggested that in future the payment of No. 5 scheme wages be made by members of the staff other than those who have any connection with the preparation of the wages sheets. The matter was referred to the chairman of Finance (Councillor Holloway) to report to the next meeting of the Finance Committee.
