LAWN TENNIS.

English Team in Form at Auckland. PERRY DEFEATED BY HUGHES. Per Press Association. AUCKLAND, November 5. The members of the English lawn tennis team made their farewell appearance in Auckland when they played in exhibition games to-day. Rain overnight and early this morning made the court heavy, and shortly after the first match commenced drizzling ram set in and continued until the last half-hour. Under these conditions the standard of tennis was exceptionally high and the crowd, which was almost as large as on Saturday, spent an enjoyable afterFinding the slower conditions more to bis liking than did Perry, whose speed was greatly diminished on the slippery surface, Hughes created a mud surprise by defeating the champion in two straight sets. France and SJturt improved upon their performance on Saturday by taking the first, set of the men’s doubles from Perrv and who, however, were definitely on the deciding set. The ladies’ doubles was interesting, owing to the fact that Misses Lyle and Dearman, who defeated Misses Round and Macfarlane, recently defeated the American ladies in the Wightman Cup contest, and so their play was followed verv closely. All four played well but the wlnniner pair, who adopted the formation of one at the net and the other at the baseline, displayed better combination. Miss Dearman’s powerful work at close range was an important factor. The only singles match was that between Misses Round and Lyle, in which the champion won in straight sets. Miss Lyle offered stout resistance, but could not cope with the persistent and varied attack of her brilliant opponent. Following are the results of the matches: ; G. P. Hughes beat F. J. Perry, 6-2, 8-6. Hughes and Perry beat D. G. France and N. G. Sturt. 5-7, 6-4. 6-1. Miss D. Round beat Miss N. M. Lyle, 6-3. 6-4. Misses Lvle and E. M. Dearman beat Misses Round and M. Macfarlane, S-G,
